Love Suicides at Amijima Essay

This paper examines how self destruction is seen in Japanese society, and how a more noteworthy comprehension can be picked up of the Japanese perspective on intentional demise by an investigation of Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s popular dramatization â€Å"The Love Suicides at Amijima. † The essayist gives a diagram of Chikamatsu’s life, abstract profession and the period in which he lived in the second 50% of the seventeenth century. The dramatic customs wherein he composed are portrayed also. His local disaster, â€Å"The Love Suicides at Amijima,† is portrayed in detail, and the author clarifies the social and family commitments wherein the heroes are caught and which at last lead to the twofold self destruction toward the end. The subject of the Love Suicides of Amijima regards the contrasts among American and Japanese culture concerning perspectives on self destruction, obligation, and respect, while as yet staying open to its 21st century American crowd. Enthusiasm, grief, and penance are stories that have existed endlessly. Another topic is love and implosion. What I have from my notes is â€Å"the division of the magnificence and mercilessness of adoration rises above spot and time. † As â€Å"One of the most ideal approaches to comprehend an alternate culture is to peruse the writing it has created for one is acquainted with the world view in which the writer works. All things considered, every content is comprised of the particularities of the world that reflects it. Furthermore, there is nothing progressively outrageous and charming case of such suicides than the affection suicides or shinj advocated by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. It is characterized as dependent on a settlement between sweethearts caught in a snare of such extreme strife they have no response spare a definitive dangerous act. In spite of the fact that we perceive that the writer’s works began many years back and positively qualities, intentions and circumstances are different in the contemporary time frame, it can in any case fill in as a scholarly beginning stage to comprehend the Japanese idea of self destruction. † Furthermore the occasions, characters, and images were all fascinating particularly Osan’s character since she is completely mindful of her husband’s love for Koharu, yet she despite everything chooses to remain with him. Her activities appear to perplex me. She comforts Jihei, despite the fact that he is crying over another ladies. Likewise, when she uncovers that she sent Koharu a letter requesting to cut off her association with Jihei, she quickly solicits Jihei to spare Koharu rather from overlooking the solicitation. Besides, Osan gives Jihei cash, (cash that is important to be saved for business and the kids) to deal with Koharu’s deliver. I am very confounded concerning why she would do this, considering she has been only a caring spouse and a mindful mother.

Outline and Evaluate the Multi Store Model of Memory free essay sample

The multi-store model of memory was proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin in1968. The model comprises of three separate stores †the tactile store, the transient memory and the drawn out memory. Data enters by means of our faculties (sight, smell, sounds, taste and contact) into the tactile store. We focus on a portion of the things that enter our tangible store, these things them proceed onward into our transient memory. Whatever is put away in the momentary memory is just brief; it can hold 7 things, plus or minus two. Things just last up 30 seconds in the transient memory and are typically encoded acoustically. After the momentary memory things are either overlooked or remembered through the practice circle which will at that point go through to the drawn out memory. As indicated by Atkinson and Shiffrin the practice of data has a major impact in the model, on the grounds that without it we wouldn’t have the option to make any new long haul recollections. We will compose a custom paper test on Blueprint and Evaluate the Multi Store Model of Memory or then again any comparable point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page At the point when data enters the drawn out memory it is typically semantically encoded. It has a boundless limit and typically remains in the store up to a real existence time. An examination that discovered proof to help support Atkinson and Shiffrin’s model of memory was H. M. H. M had a totally unblemished present moment and long haul memory before a mishap he had, yet after the mishap he could no longer make any new long haul recollections. This would give proof on the grounds that to gain new long haul experiences the data needs to go through the momentary memory and practice circle first, yet for his situation they were not working accurately. Murdock (1962) additionally gives proof for the two separate stores. He gave members a rundown of 20 words each in turn, they recalled the words toward the beginning of the rundown which is known as the supremacy impact and the words toward the end which is known as the recency impact better than those in the center. This backings the model in light of the fact that the words toward the beginning would have been practiced and entered the drawn out memory yet the words toward the finish of the rundown would in any case be in the transient memory when they review the rundown. Anyway there are a few restrictions to the multi-store model of memory. One being that there is more than one sort of long haul memory. Procedural, long winded and decisive are generally various sorts. Procedural is abilities that we learn, such as riding a bicycle, you can always remember how to ride a bicycle. Wordy is occasions that happen that we don’t retain yet by one way or another recall for quite a while, in some detail lastly definitive is realities that we don’t put any exertion into practicing to recollect however we despite everything do recall them. Another confinement is an investigation Hyde and Jenkins (1973) did. As indicated by them we can recollect things with no practice by any stretch of the imagination. Things like the smell of petroleum or what’s in a magazine can stay with us for quite a while with no practice.

Free Will Vs. Determinism Essay - 2770 Words

Free Will Vs. Determinism I. Determinism Before one can properly evaluate the entire debate that enshrouds the Free Will/Determinism, each term must have a meaning, but before we explore the meaning of each term, we must give a general definition. Determinism is, Everything that happens is caused to happen. (Clifford Williams. Free Will and Determinism: A Dialogue pg 3). This is the position that Daniel, a character in Williams’ dialogue, chooses to believe and defend. David Hume goes a little deeper and explains in his essay, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding of Liberty and Necessity, that determinism is this: It is universally allowed, that matter, in all its operations, is actuated by a necessary force, and†¦show more content†¦Daniel’s response was to clear up where the reasonable bounds of induction truly exist. If one were to drop one hundred objects of all shapes, sizes, and weights, and found that they all fell to the ground, then it would be safe to induce that all objects will f all to the ground. Accordingly, science has dropped thousands of events, and found that they all had causes. So, according to Daniel, it is not only sane to assume, but actually should be inferred that all things are caused. The only response to this is that we still have not seen enough to make an accurate inference. Though there seems to be a lot of evidence in favor of determinism, there is one field that remains an anomaly in science. Almost every area of science is based on cause and effect, order, and a structured protocol of operation, but the Quantum Mechanics is different. All matter is made up of atoms, and all atoms are made up of electrons, neutrons, and protons. These in turn are made up of quarks. The movement of quarks, and the emission of photons as electrons skip shells seem to be totally random. If this is true, then what are the implications on the free will/determinism debate? It may seem like an obscure point, but if you look at the definition of determinism, it says that all things are caused, and if there is one single uncaused event, then determinism must be false. So if you find one random event, then determinism is nothing more than a myth, but, in light of thisShow MoreRelatedFree Will vs Determinism627 Words   |  3 PagesTed Honderich Determinism Vs Free Will Psychology 101-1322 Professor: James Pattison By: Belinda Bielicki July 2, 2011 Determinism versus Free Will: The most important and the oldest philosophical question is perhaps that of free will and determinism. Questions: 1. How well did Amazon respond to changes In Macro and microenvironment factors and how well did it manage its value chain? 2.Comment on Amazons approach to international business strategy by evaluating its structure, resources, and culture. Answers: Answer 1 Amazon, a name that was synonymous to wildlife and nature some decades ago, has been remolded as something entirely different to its previous association. Amazon is now a household name for online shopping catering to the needs of customers worldwide. In 1994, Jeff Bezos founded Amazon and launched it a year later (Smith, Rupp and Offodile 2017). Beginning initially as an online bookstore, Amazon soon expanded its business by including other items as well. It is the first of its kind e-commerce business that revolutionized the way shopping is done. With the changing era, Amazon.com molded itself to suit the current generation. This section provides an analysis of the macro and micro-environmental factors that affected Amazon since its inception until 2015 and how it responded to the changes (Khan 2016). Amazon has been in the business for over 20 years and operating in almost every country in the world Salam (2016). Numerous factors influence the business and this can be analyzed by applying PESTLE. This model would help in presenting the macro-environmental factors that include political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors affecting the company. Political factors In any country, businesses are bound to be affected by the political situation concomitant in the present age. Amazon.com too had to face issues related to political factors. Policies implemented by governments in different countries might restrict or broaden a companys profits. During the early 90s, when Amazon put its first step in Washington, economic globalization had just begun to spread its feathers and this provided the company a great opportunity to extend its business. However,Amazon.com profits from a countrys political stability. The absence of stability especially in developed countries might prove a threat to the business. Economic factors Economic factors relate to the economic trends that affect a business in any country. To Amazon, the economic pattern of countries where it operates its online retail business directly influences its overall business. However, centered mainly in and on the US, Amazon garners profit largely from countries within the continent. Hence, the companys profits and revenues depend on the economic trend prevailing in most of the American nations. Social factors: Social and cultural factors that affect Amazon include wealth disparity in under developed and developing countries, rise in consumerism and rise in buying habits of people amongst others. While some factors pose a threat to Amazon the disparity in wealth others provide an opportunity as well increased consumerism and buying habits. With the advancement in technology, more people are having access to the internet and providing more opportunities for Amazon to expand. Technological factors Amazons business is entirely dependent upon technology and it is obvious that factors relating to technology will affect it. In the initial years, Amazon had limited customers within the US itself, as many did not have access to the internet. With the emergence of information technology, the business reached its zenith with its customer base growing rapidly. It however needs to be mentioned that this factor, although one of Amazons biggest strength, might prove its biggest weakness as well. This is because the company depends heavily on technology for adding and retaining customers, maintaining and optimizing services and so on. Legal factors The norms and regulations that have to be followed by a company come under this category. These factors can be linked to political factors because the government is involved. Globalization has helped Amazon to increase its customer base, as governments have eased import and export regulations. The companys corporate social responsibility (CSR) regulations are also designed in a way that adheres to the rules that ensure environmental protection. Environmental factors Amazons CSR policy states the importance of developing a business model that encourages sustainability. The company looks to incorporate clean technologies meaning less impact on environment. However, the company has faced criticism for its neglect of CSR, the sustainability issue in particular. In its 20 years, Amazon has never published a report on sustainability and has always avoided talks on corporate responsibility, published a leading daily (Theguardian.com 2017). The company nonetheless looks forwards to change this image. It has appointed people with expertise in this field. Figure 1. Amazons PESTLE Analysis (Source: Created by author) Changing environment influences companies to change or update their strategies from time to time. Amazon has been able to adapt to the changing trends but it still lacks in certain areas. Through Porters Five Forces Analysis, the changing industrial environment can be evaluated. Figure 2. Porters Five Forces (Source: Created by author) Competitive forces This indicates the rivalry of Amazon with existing e-commerce businesses. The situation was different in the 90s when Amazon was launched. Fewer online retailers were there and Amazon too was only involved in selling of books. Its main competitors were Walmart and e-Bay. However, with the changing era, competition increased at an alarming pace owing to increased access to internet. Threats of new entrants Globalization opened the gates for business especially online retailers to spread their business and earn unprecedented revenues. This put Amazon in a vulnerable position has it faced tough competition from the new entrants like Jabong, Flipkart and so on. The new online firms affect Amazons market share that reduces gradually. Customers can easily shift to a new firm as it does not cost them anything and it would not have any negative affect as well. However, Amazon has established a reputation that would be difficult for new companies to match. Threats of substitution Similar to the previous factor, substitute sites are present in abundance that allows customers to switch easily from Amazon. Customers have gamut of options to choose from thus placing Amazon in a vulnerable position. The company thus aims to strategize its future growth keeping this in mind. Bargaining power of suppliers Suppliers have the power to bargain for costs with the company when there is limited availability of suppliers. Thus, a company must ensure that their suppliers base is strong enough to ensure cost effective strategy. Amazon in this regard has an advantage over most companies. Bargaining power of buyers The consumers have the power to switch to other firms when they feel Amazon demands higher prices for similar products. Abundant options are available for consumers to shift from Amazon and choose another company. This shows that Amazons customer-centric strategy is apt to overcome this challenge. After a thorough analysis of the Five Forces, it is evident that Amazon has managed to maintain its position in the ever-growing competitive market. This can be further explained through its value chain analysis. Amazon has shown exceptional growth by managing the value chain efficiently over the years. The value chain can be categorized into primary and support activities. The primary activity includes inbound logistics, outbound logistics, operations, marketing, sales, and services. Firm infrastructure, human resources, technology development and procurement are included in support activities (Ritala, Golnam and Wegmann 2014). Primary activities Figure 3. Amazons Value Chain Analysis (Source: Created by author) The overall analysis of Amazons micro and macro-environmental factors bring forth its strengths and weaknesses and also its threats and opportunities (Holweg and Helo 2014). This could be better understood by doing the SWOT analysis. Figure 4. Amazons SWOT Analysis (Source: Created by author) Amazon has not limited its business to online shopping only and has carried out strategic conglomerations and deals to expand its business. Its growth strategies can be understood from the Ansoff Matrix (Thijsen, Tong and van Leer 2014). Products Existing New Market Penetration Generating revenues from existing markets by launching loyalty programs and reducing prices Product development With existing capabilities With new capabilities Beyond current expectations Introducing Kindle, Kindle Fire, Echo etc. Market Development New segments New territories New uses With new capabilities Beyond current expectations Expanding to countries beyond the US like India, China, Sweden and Poland Diversification With existing capabilities With new capabilities Beyond current expectations Acquiring IMDb, Zappos and other such products, launching Amazon Web Services (AWS) Markets Figure 5. Ansoff Matrix demonstrating Amazons growth strategy (Source: Created by author) Amazons growth strategy reveals that the company has made smart use of the Ansoff Matrix to relate the strategies to its SWOT strategy. A close look at the opportunities presented to the company reveals its market development strategy to expand to new countries (Hinterhuber and Liozu 2014). Answer 2 Amazon managed to reach the position it is in now by implementing all its strategies systematically and in accord with the changing environment. This was possible because of its customer-centric strategy and hybrid business strategy. An analysis of its mission and vision statement gives an insight into the companys long-term success. Reaching globally, giving customer first priority and offering wide range of products come under its vision statement and results do show that the company has achieved its vision (Laudon and Traver 2013). The mission statement focuses on offering lowest prices, superior selection of products and making those available at extreme convenience. This has also been achieved by the company and the commitment is still there to achieve it further. Amazon successfully managed to retain its top position in the e-commerce business and held 38% market share in 2016. The company earned revenue of USD 135, 987 in the last fiscal year, which is close to 28 per cent increase from the previous year (Fortune.com 2017). This trend seems to continue for the company in the current year as well, report leading business sites. These statistics further strengthen the fact that Amazon has been successful in implementing its strategies in accordance with its goals. This success of Amazon could be attributed to its smart use of technology that helped reduce cost. To cite an example, the company initialized the use of Kiva robots from the year 2014 to help in the processes of picking and packing and cut operating costs down to almost twenty percent (Statista.com 2017). In addition, the company announced the launch of drone delivery services under its Prime air program last year that is estimated to save shipping costs to an unimaginable extent. T he Prime air program would prove highly cost-friendly for both the customer and the company believe experts. Izogo and Ozo (2015) argue that despite Amazons success in the e-commerce industry, it is still under pressure from the growing competition. Emerging markets in the online retail industry are giving a stiff competition to the e-commerce giant. The brick-and-mortar retailers such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, other e-commerce sites like Flipkart, eBay are some top competitors. However, Amazon has managed to maintain its position in the ever-growing online market. One of the prime reasons for its success is the implementation of the sustainability measures. Although the company did face backlash for its neglect of sustainability issues but it has come a long way since then. Rooftop solar systems, wind farms, installation of LED lights in all its offices across the globe are some initiatives taken by Amazon to encourage sustainability while doing business (Amazon.com 2017). These measures have been taken to develop and maintain the business in the competitive market. Amazon has also managed to survive the bleak e-commerce market by applying innovative ideas to attract customers (Al Sayyed 2016). To illustrate, the company started as an online bookstore but now offers service ranging from movies, music to gaming and more. Amazons intentions to expand and penetrate into every market concerned with technology can be clearly seen from its announcements in recent years. Starting as a humble online store selling books, the company has now expanded to every aspect of technology providing services from Prime air to Echo and such (He 2015). The hunger to expand globally is evident from the measures mentioned in the previous segments. Amazon is structured as a transnational organization that operates in other countries with headquarters based in Seattle, US. Its international strategy is better understood from the Bartlett and Ghoshal matrix (Gershon 2016). According to the matrix, a transnational organization aims to achieve local responsiveness and at the same time target global integration as well. This type of strategy has high pressure for both local responsiveness and global integration. Amazons strategy is in accord with this type of international strategy where it focuses on global expansion while maintaining local base. Sumantra Ghoshals organizing framework for global strategy explains the issues managers face in the global economy and ways to tackle them (Rothaermel 2015). Three basic factors that help tackle these issues include Attaining effectiveness in existing activities Managing risks related with performing these actions Developing inner learning means enable innovation and acclimatize to future changes Evaluating Amazons global strategy, one can clearly see its close link to the above three factors. The company consistently focuses on lessening national differences to stress on global expansion. Further, Amazon follows a hierarchical structure of organization with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) leading the group. Figure 6. Amazons Organizational Structure (Source: Created by author) The Resource Based View model provides a thorough explanation of the resources and competencies of Amazon. The RBV helps in exploring the abilities of a firm to implement and maintain effective national and global strategies. After evaluating the resources and competencies of Amazon, it is important to understand its work culture in order to analyze its international strategy. Amazon.com boasts of an excellent work culture involving employees from different cultural backgrounds. Nonetheless, it has been criticized for having a work culture that pressurizes people to work for long hours and reply to emails or text messages even after midnight. In addition, it has also been accused of discriminating against unwell employees who are supposedly fired for not being able to deliver (Bbc.com 2017). Viewing from Hofstedes five cultural dimensions, three in particular, the workplace culture of Amazon could be better understood. Focusing on individualism versus collectivism, masculinity versus femininity and power distance index gives evidence of Amazons unforgiving or brutal culture (Rallapalli and Montgomery 2015). Amazon is mainly a US based company and hence its workplace culture would uphold traditions popular in the US. Employees from other backgrounds thus find it difficult to adjust into the companys culture. With all these factors in mind, Amazon strategically implements its plans and succeeds in expanding globally. In fact, it has managed to penetrate into almost arenas of technological market that was seen impossible some decades ago (Day 2014). References: Al Sayyed, S., 2016. Strategic Marketing. Wire Walkings History and Examples

Introduction Wire walking or tightrope walking can be defined as a way of walking on a thin wire or rope usually at accelerated height. It is associated with activities such as somersaulting and other acrobatics that can be viewed as devilish on a high set wire.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Wire Walking’s History and Examples specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A wire walker can use poles to provide balance or he/she can stretch the arms perpendicularly so that they act as poles. Wire walking is done in different styles such as slack wire, tight wire, high wire, slack lining and freestyle slack lining where by height is the defining term for their differences. It has along history of about 2000 years although it has not been given priority so far. It all started as wire dancing, then grew into walking/ tiptoeing and eventually wire running where the wire walker can walk through a given distance ov er a short period of time (Dickens 1861, 538). It is a type of game that involves the player (walker) and the audience. For one to become a good wire walker a lot of exercise is required added with courage. It is one of the most risky exercise one can engage in because of the dangers that surrounds it including falling from the great height which can result into fractures and dislocations of the body organs and in some extreme cases resulting into death. Not all can be in a position to engage in such a dangerous exercise, apart from those with a passion for it and have some inborn characters which compel and enable them to perform well in such an activity. Wire walking is an occupation which needs a strong mentality and hard working qualities. A strong courage and determination of each wire-walker has, makes them a legend. Examples of wire walkers Several wire walkers can be looked at so as to understand the motivation behind engaging in such a dangerous occupation. Such include, Ad ili Wuxor from China who in 1997 won himself a title â€Å"Prince of high wire walking† because of managing to walk on a steel wire over River Yangtze in 13 minutes 48 seconds. To road towards this achievement was not all that easy but involved some risks and disappointments. To begin with, his father was a wire walker and it is possible that Adili inherited this from his father, although, this same father had left a will that was against any family members to participate in this activity due to the poor pay it had earned him throughout his life, and as a young boy Adili could have been expected to go as per his father’s will, but on the contrary he took the risk by defiling this will.Advertising Looking for research paper on history? Money was not an issue to him, despite its meager pay, he continued participating in the dangerous activity, the love he had for this game and the joy he derived from it could not be compared to the payment he was to get at the end. He was even at one time involved in an accident while performing that cost him his ribs and bornes. He even went into a comma, but upon recovery he embarked on the activities he could afford and even dint give a dump in using any safety equipment. It is this determination, consistence and passion that have seen him this far not forgetting to mention his win as the first torch bearer in his town. He forges forward towards making this activity known globally such that those who had taken part in it in the past can gain recognition and eventual lead to the development of this occupation (Prince of High-wire Walking 20 09). Niagara Falls is a place that has gained popularity because of many wire walkers who have tried to challenge it. Several walkers have tried to cross this river which is a very dangerous attempt bearing in mind of its many waters and heavy waves and tides. Blondin was the first one to cross this river on a rope, he subsequently involved in more risky activities such as crossing while carrying his manager and in another occasion while pushing a wheelbarrow, his determination in crossing the river twice a week earned him more confidence and fame where he could attract thousands of spectators. On looking at Blondin performing, another man, Leonard Hunt got attracted and decides to join this occupation, after breaking this news to a girl friend, the relationship breaks but this does not prevent him from taking this risk. Despite his great performances compared to Blondin, he still does not gain favor from the crowds but he keeps engaging in more and more risky acts all with an aim o f outdoing Blondin. At one time a woman he carried fell down into the waters and died after drowning. He is even involved in an accident where he badly broke his leg but still continued in his walk up to a nearest island. Several other walkers challenged the falls including a woman whose demise became a mystery despite the several cases of death involved. This woman was the only one and the first woman to cross the falls on a rope, she did it backwards while blindfolded and with baskets on her feet (French 2008).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Wire Walking’s History and Examples specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The act of crossing this falls is compared to committing suicide with those who survive being referred to as the dare devils. It therefore, takes courage and some unique traits in a person in order to participate in such a game with a lot of passion and enjoyment despite all the risk incl uding death that involves it (Niagara Falls Daredevils n.d). Philippe Petit is another man who has gained fame because of the act of crossing the twin towers on a wire. The towers are several meters high and when he had the idea of walking over between the towers he was discouraged by a friend and even his wife but still could not resist the urge to do it. It took him money and time to prepare on how to under take the risky task bearing in mind how guarded the southern tower was. It took courage to make his first walk despite the threats he received from the observers. After some several trips he gained confidence and now could even perform dances and other activities on the rope while walking. This earned him fame but he still led a poor life besides engaging in this risky occupation. He even got bewildered on looking at the distance he walked once he was downstairs but despite all these, he still could not resist the call in him to still walk and he says that it was not his choice to do this, but he was chosen by this occupation (Higginbotham 2003). Conclusion Wire walking is not an occupation that can earn one a living, it only earns fame. Many are the risks that are involved in its undertaking including death. It is therefore an activity that requires great determination, practice, sacrifice and unique character in one for him/her to carry it on. Works Cited Dickens, Charles. All the year round. The Technological Advances of Early Man †History Essay

The Technological Advances of Early Man – History Essay Free Online Research Papers The Technological Advances of Early Man History Essay Webster defines technology as the practical application of knowledge in a particular area. The advancement of man from the beginning of civilization to present-day passes through many stages of history. Some of those stages include man before civilization, as in the old, middle, and new stone ages, the Mesopotamian civilization, the Egyptian civilization, the Greek civilization, and the Roman civilization. Each new civilization brings with them new ideas, new culture, and new technology. Technology is the key to early civilization, as well as all other civilization. Humans have technology because of man’s ability to reason. If we do not use this ability, then we are only as good as the animals around us. Another important aspect of technology in civilization is that, in most cases, the civilization with the greatest technology usually survives longer. For example, if one soldier arms himself with a copper shield and a wooden shield and the other soldier arms himself with a iron sword and a bronze shield, the second soldier is most likely to survive because he has the greater technology that gives him better materials to work with. Before one can discuss the different civilizations and their technology, he must first talk about civilization in itself. Civilization is defined by three elements: cities, metal-working or technology, and writing. Cities also need three elements which are people, defensive walls, and government. Of course a city needs a population, but it also needs defensive walls to have protection from outside invaders. A city also needs a government, of a centralized ruling unit. Early civilizations almost always had a king, usually a military leader. The government gives the city unity and organization. In addition to cities, a civilization also needs metal-working, or technology. The first metals were copper and tin. The earliest civilizations uses copper because it is easy to obtain and easy to shape. Technology then advances into the bronze age where man mixes copper and tin. This process makes bronze, which is a stronger and more durable metal than copper. A down side to using copper is that it is brittle and looses its blade after so many uses. Bronze, however, is much stronger. After bronze comes iron. The discovery of iron solves more than one problem. First, it is a better and stronger metal than bronze. Second, tin is hard to find in the ancient world. This hinders the process of making bronze. Iron ore though is found in abundance in the ancient world, which makes production a little easier. The only exception to production being easier is that iron is difficult to melt because of its high melting point. Nevertheless, the technology of man is steadily increa sing. Writing is also a necessity to civilization. Writing first appears because of trade and business. Business transactions of the ancient world provided the first need for a written language. Another need for writing is to record the past. In many cases, stories are passed down from generation to generation. These stories need to be recorded for the observation of history and culture for the generations to come. The first forms of writing is pictographs. This form uses pictures, which means that man just simply drew a picture of what he wanted to say. For example, if the dealer wanted to trade ten chickens for a cow, he would simply draw ten chickens and then a cow. As technology progressed, writing and language followed. Pictures became symbols, and symbols became letters. Civilization depends on the three elements of cities, metal-working, and writing. Without these elements, civilization does not exist. This brings us to our first observation of man: the Paleolithic Stone Age. The stone ages is the time period before civilization. Man uses tools of stone. Paleolithic Stone Age means â€Å"old stone age†. during this time, man was know as hunter-gatherers. As hunger-gatherers, man was nomadic, which means they followed their food source. Man had no farm knowledge and paid no attention to climate or season change and how it affects the environment. Man also improvised shelters during this time. The shelters were mostly found in caves. Man also mastered the use of fire. With this use of fire, man also learned how to use the fire to harden wood for weapons and tools. In addition to wooden tools, man also used stone to make many objects. Standardization was developed as best it could be. Standardization is the making of tools accord ing to a certain pattern. Man repeated the patterns that worked the best when making tools. In addition to technological advances, man also achieved physical skill. Man mastered the art of spear-throwing or shooting a bow and arrow. Man mostly used this for hunting, but other times in warfare. All of this technology helped man survive through the four Ice Ages of the Paleolithic Period. After the Paleolithic Period comes the Mesolithic Stone Age, or â€Å"middle stone age†. This time period is considered to be a transitional period. The transition is from the final ice age to the settlement of man for cultivation. During this time, man began certain farming techniques which produced wheat and barley. Even though man began to use farming as a source of food, the majority of man remained hunger-gatherers. The culture and technology, other than the new farming techniques, ultimately remain the same with from the Paleolithic to the Mesolithic time periods. The middle stone age’s time period changes with each area of existence. This is because the polar ice cap is shrinking slowly. It is out of certain areas while remaining in others. The Neolithic, or new, Stone Age emerges shortly after the Mesolithic time period. Man during this time is slowly getting away from savagery by increasing his reliance upon stock-keeping and farming. This new reliance in creased the population because it solved the problem of food shortage by taking man away from being hunter-gatherers. Temporary settlements were established for stock-keeping and cattle herding. The settlements remained temporary because man was still developing his farming skills so some nomadic measures were needed. However, after man perfected his farming techniques, he is able to establish permanent settlements. All of the permanent settlements occurred because of a reason. Some of these reasons are water, food, clothing, shelter, and defense from violence. These needs are the reason for the first settlements emerging in the two places known as the Tigris and Euphrates River Valley and the Nile River Valley. These two river valleys are perfect for suppo rting man because it has a huge water source that also produces food and defense. Another advantage of being near a river is trade. The fastest way to ship product in mass form is by water. This raised man’s awareness of his surroundings and helped the technology by observing other tribes and settlements around their own. With the population growing, more and more ideas appear. By using this spreading of ideas, the Neolithic man is able to begin to use copper tools by the end of the Neolithic age. If writing is to be considered the difference between barbarianism and civilized man, then the first civilization is forms in Mesopotamia, also known as the Tigris and Euphrates River Valley. The Mesopotamian civilization is not one big empire. Instead, it is an accumulation of several city-states that are ruled by warrior kings. Each city-state has massive walls around the city to protect itself from outside invasion. The walls are made from a mud-brick formula. The farming was rather easy in Mesopotamia because of the fertile land. Man starts to learn to observe the environment around him. In example, farmers begin to observe the natural flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and develop their own irrigation system. The people of Mesopotamia also had buildings. Every city had a temple built in the middle. The temple was made from mud-brick also, and it was built to honor their various polytheistic gods. The use of copper is also being perfected during this time p eriod. Some bronze is used later on, but copper is still utilized more because it is cheaper and easier to work with. All communication is either by boat or by foot. The civilizations use the rivers as much as possible when it comes to travel because of the speed and safety. Foreign invaders often come into the land of Mesopotamia and take over. Some, like the Akkadians, form a unified empire. Others, like the Babylonians, go back to independent city-states. Each time the land is conquered, a little bit of society and culture from each civilization is left and intermingled with the new power. The intelligence of man is growing and technology is increasing with it. Very soon after civilization appeared in Mesopotamia, civilization also appeared in the Nile River Valley, also known as Egypt. The Egyptian society always appeared as a unified empire. Pharaoh is given absolute power. Egyptian cities were surrounded by defensive walls. Much like Mesopotamia, Egypt had very fertile land because of the Nile River. The Nile River Valley is considered to be the most fertile land in the known world, but the fertility stops at the borders of the river. Wealth in ancient Egypt is calculated by the amount of land that a person has. The more land a person owns, the wealthier he is. The growth of slavery also began in Egypt. In fact, the famous Egyptian pyramids made of granite, built for tombs for pharaoh, were built by slaves. Rather than kill his enemies, pharaoh would often take his enemies into captivity to use their labor. More inventions used by man in this civilization were the wheeled-cart, later turned into the chariot, and sails. Large ships were created mostly for the imports and exports since Egypt was the leading export for grain in the world. Egyptian civilization became very rich off of their exports and the fruits of their labor are found in one of the most famous archaeological finds in history: the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen. The bronze age of Egypt is believed to be at its peak at this time because of he many bronze fine arts and crafts found in the tomb. Workings of gold, silver, and ivory are also found in the tomb which tells us that the civilized man is progressing exceptionally. Around the same time in history, both the Mesopotamian and the Egyptian civilization begin to die out, leaving scattered, independent states of civilizations. Shortly after this downfall of civilization, iron is discovered. Iron is tougher to melt, but, once it is formed, it is much stronger than any other metal at this time in history. This new invention spreads by the scattered settlers of the fallen civilizations. Once the proper techniques of making iron tools are mastered, the civilization of man picks up again with brand new technology. After the invention of iron, man also begins to make wider roads of stone. With these larger roads, armies can cross large amounts of land with ease. Traders can also use these roads to carry various goods from other civilization. Civilization is spread throughout the known world either by choice or by force. With civilization comes technology, which is a never-ending evolution. Temple of Zeus at Akragas, Agrigento, Sicily 500-460 B.C Essay

Temple of Zeus at Akragas, Agrigento, Sicily 500-460 B.C - Essay Example In Agrigento, Sicily, one of the most ancient architectural designs stands there even today, attracting thousands of people from across the globe. Historically, the town is famous for its splendid assortment of more than seven Greek temples that dates back to the sixth and fifth centuries BC. Standing on the southern part of the city of Agrigento, these temples provide a classic example of a historical study about ancient architectural designs, and how they influences modern day architecture (Wilson 7). Many historians believe that the Greek colonialists are the ones who built the city of Akragas in 580 BC. These colonialists had travelled from far, precisely from Rhodes and settled in Sicily. Life during the colonial times was not any easy, as tyranny, persecutions and slavery took the orders of the day. However, these periods happened and democracy settled in slowly and the city dwellers, about 200,000 of them in the fifth century BC, embarked on a journey of developing their city. High-quality wine, olives, and horses decorated the beautiful city, and later on the most famous and beautiful temples stood elected. However, something astonishing happened in 406 BC. The Carthaginians invaded Akragas just barely eight months after the construction of the temples, and mutilated the temples. The Carthaginians ruled the city until 340 BC when Timoleon engaged the Carthage in war and finally defeated them. However, it is important to note that the city had lost its glory and magnificent scene, a scene that stands unrecovered even up to today. The change o one empire to another has not helped in the rebuilding of the temples. However, these temples still have a historical significance to modern day historians and architectural designers (Paton 74-94). In Italy, historians agree that the Olympian Zeus Temple is the prevalent Doric temple ever built and it has some historical significance. However, it is paramount to note that due to various reasons, the construction of these temple never ended. In fact, today, the temple of Zeus lies in ruins as the people responsible for its construction did not do much to compete it. Standing in the Valle dei Templi, other famous temples surround the temple of Zeus thus giving the later a sheer significance. Nonetheless, it is imperative to note that nobody recorded the exact history this temple, and therefore it is quite unclear. This does not however imply that there are no absolute facts about the temple of Zeus. In fact, one of its significance is the commemoration of war pitting Syracuse and Carthaginians (Battle of Himera 480 BC). As earlier noted the Carthaginians had taken control of the city and imposed their rule. Some historians such as Diodorus Siculus point out that the Carthaginians are the ones who built the temple by using slaves. Here, the slaves were mainly the captured enemies parading as soldiers but were now defeated and taken into captivity where they subjected them into hard work and labo r (Wilson 48-61). The ancient literature does not say much about the temple of Zeus although many historians mention it in their writings. For example, Polybius, one of the Greek historians records in a memo that although the other temples surrounding the temple of Zeus looked complete and beautiful unlike the temple of Zeus, the later was completely odd in terms of appearance, design and dimensions. He goes on to say

Immigration and Employment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Immigration and Employment - Essay Example (Castle & Miller, 2003) First it is important that we defined both terms as used, "cultural mosaic" is mostly used to refer to multiculturalism that is used to mean many diverse culture in a place or in an area where diverse culture relates together peacefully. the concept is used to contrast the melting pot term which is used to imply the "ingredients" in the pot which are people with diverse cultures melting together to fuse and form one identity. The two ideas are very different from each other, however the Canadian concept is seen as a more positive especially when it comes to employment and immigrants working in the country. (Castle & Miller, 2003) Canada is a country which is obviously multicultural due to many immigrants that have immigrated to the country over the years. Canada is well known all over the world for being among the most liberal, democratic and welcoming countries in the whole world. It's as a vibrant mosaic of diverse culture where different people resides and work together peaceful. It is estimated that 16% of the total Canadian population of 30 million are first-generation immigrants. The Canadian government is dedicated to a guiding principle of diversity which is designed to preserve and improve the diverse cultural heritage of the Canadians, whilst attempting to attain equality in the social, cultural political and economic issues of Canada. (Castle & Miller, 2003) The "melting pot" is designed to imply homogeneous society development where people with diverse cultural backgrounds are put together to create a multi-ethnic society. as Northrop Frye a literary philosopher observes, Canadian students have been conditioned from the early stage to think of themselves as citizen of a nation with uncertain identity, with a unclear past and a dangerous future on the other hand children in America are conditioned from very early stage to believe in themselves that they are citizens of a the greatest nation in the world. (Castle & Miller, 2003) Many people who have settled in Canada and America always have some kind of reference about the two countries. While those settled in the United States talk of the similarities they share those in Canada talk about the differences. Probably this is because of the in the United States people are expected to adopt to the culture in the United States while in Canada people are the Canadian respect and value the differences. Canada has always been a mosaic country, as explained by sociology historian Castle & Miller (2003) who termed Canada as "a vertical mosaic" and the mosaic term keeps being used because immigrants are encouraged to maintain their culture when in the country. Though both countries have a history of immigrants the two countries have had different policies towards same issues. In the beginning American believed in creating a nation which favoured unity and individual rights, where unity of the nation was more important than the diversity of individuals. While in Canada the country encouraged a system which was based on ethnic particularly with the emphasis of the French culture and French language. (Castle & Miller, 2003) Effects on employment As pertaining employment of immigrants in Canada which is a central social issue

Nature of the Mind Essay -- Poetry

William Blake, a poet that strongly believed in the power of mind, once wrote, "if we see with imagination, we see all things in the infinite." The Romantic poets use their imagination when gazing at nature, and therefore see and feel the infinite through their poetry. William Wordsworth expresses the serene beauty that nature possesses and its calming effects on the mind. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the poetic geniuses of the age, uses nature and his imagination to create surreal atmospheres. Another Romantic poet, by the name of Percy Bysshe Shelley, shows great longing for the freedom that nature possesses and the freeing effect it has on him. These poets of the Romantic period look at nature from a higher consciousness called the imagination. William Wordsworth, through many of his poems, expresses the serene beauty contained in nature and its tranquilizing effects on human thoughts. In "Lines Composed a Few Miles from Tintern Abbey", the speaker looks "on nature...to chasten and subdue...the mind" and bring peace to his thoughts. Looking deeply into nature brings the feelings of sublime contentment and new feelings of inspiration that one cannot find in any alternate surrounding. In Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," the speaker, when "in vacant or in pensive mood," recalls a memory of a past picturesque outdoor scene that "is the bliss of [his] solitude." His mind's pencil edges a lasting portrait of a scene in nature and the emotions of its beauty in the speaker's mind. The "dancing daffodils" will stay with the speaker even when the original drawing has faded. Another poem, "Composed upon Westminster Bridge," expresses the lulling atmosphere of the early morning and its encompassing calm a... ...s are "profuse strains of unpremeditated art," singing exactly what it feels, without restraint. Percy Shelley imagines these feelings of freedom and artless beauty in nature's creations that without imagination would never be conceived. Through poetry, the Romantics, Wordsworth, Coleridge and Shelley, make many connections between the human mind and its natural surroundings by way of imagination. William Wordsworth emphasizes nature's soothing powers on the mind and its short term and long term effects. Shelley, on the other hand, expresses the boundless life of nature and its ability of uninhibited expression. Samuel Coleridge, the true believer in the mind's versatility, focuses on the flexibility of one's imagination in the presence of nature. Because of these poets and their poetry, the rest of the world is tempted to take a step into the imagination. Justus Case

Just Us! Case Just Us! is a corporation that imports, roasts and sells primarily organic coffee from fair traded certified coffee producers. Their vision is: â€Å"to be a leading Fair Trade business that builds on quality, professionalism and innovation for the benefit of all our stake holders. Since its inception, Just Us! had experienced healthy growth in the maritime provinces of Canada, mainly supported by its corporate values: social and environmental responsibility, sustainability, ethical practices in all the areas of the business and in all stakeholders, and product differentiation. They even opened a fair trade museum to help educate the public on the social impact and benefits of fair trade. Once roasted and packed, the coffee and other products are shipped to retail outlets, supermarket chains, health food stores, coffee shops and churches. A substantial portion of Just Us! revenues came from wholesaling to large retail stores such as supermarket chains. Their coffee is a lso offered in the Just Us cafes, which were meant to be a place where customers could enjoy a cup of premium fair trade coffee and gather information about fair trade. The locations were not standardized as a typical chain.A major competitor in the retail organic fair trade coffee market is Kicking Horse which also offers products that are certified organic and fair traded. Its main channels are: coffee shops, gourmet food stores, grocery chains and restaurants. The growth of fair trade product sales had prompted several major food brands to offer fair trade products, such as: Kraft Foods, Procter & Gamble and Nestle. Also, in Canada, large super market chains such as Loblaws were offering also fair traded private labeled products which was concerning for Just Us, since supermarkets is one of its most important channels. In the coffee shop area, there was a lot of competition since some independent coffee shops and well-known chains (Ex. Starbucks) were trying to tap into the  "fair trade trend†. Due to the original management team lack of marketing experience a new Marketing Director was hired and part of the initial issues she found was that Just Us! did not spend much on advertising. 2009 had been set at $20,000. There was a massive growth opportunity in the fair trade market in Canada but the economy was on recession, therefore, the expansion needed to be planned carefully. The marketing director had several specific questions to answer to help develop a marketing plan to bolster the growth of Just Us! First off, how was Just Us! going to target new buyers given the current competition and what segment would those buyers belong to? College students were clearly a growing customer base and Just Us! already had a strong presence in three college universities. Therefore, marketing should be directed at the young, educated demographic that are willing to pay a premium for products.Furthermore, the majority of their sales are business to business and their marketing needs to emphasize the benefits of fair trade to the end user. The case stated that the internet was a great tool for increasing awareness of fair trade products, along with initiatives that enhance word of mouth (p. 3). In order to reach new customers they should consider expanding their internet marketing, such as using search engine optimization/ search engine marketing. They can also utilize co-op advertising with other organizations that emphasize fair trade, organic, and environmentally friendly practices. The fair trade museum should also be utilized to educate potential customers and will be discussed in more detail below. All Just Us! advertising needs to emphasize the story behind the products in order to educate new customers. Educating customers on the benefits of fair trade is the key to growth and will set Just Us! apart from competitors with brand recognition. In order for Just Us! to enhance the cafe’s performance they need to improve the custom er experience and become customers’ first choice of â€Å"place outside the home to enjoy coffee. Surveys and focus groups should be used to find out what customers like to do in their cafes as well as what customers like about the competitors cafes (Starbucks and Trident) and incorporate those into Just Us! ’ cafes. Additionally, the current Just Us! cafes are stand-alone destination shops. Just Us! should open up new stores in large commercial shopping centers in densely populated cities with multiple Universities. This would allow Just Us to still market to the young educated demographic that have long customer lifetime values that they have had success with and reach new customers via foot traffic in the shopping center.By keeping the overall educational theme about fair trade and brand awareness the same across all of the cafes should be able to convert new customers into loyal customers. Another questions the Marketing Director had to consider was how Just Us! c an expand their loyal customer base? This could be achieved through improving the customer experience mentioned above. However, offering opportunities for the customers to get involved would create a concept of community among their customers and which could develop into a core competency and set them apart from their competitors. Just Us! ould achieve this by having guest speakers or workshops on fair trade in the stores or even get involved with community organizations to help educate people about fair trade. Customers could sign up to receive emails for upcoming events, new products, new services, and new social initiatives. These actions would all help expand their loyal customer base. The Marketing Director also needed to make several changes to the marketing program in order to benefit the cafes. The marketing budget should be increased to reflect the company sales and growth potentials. A larger budget will allow Just Us! o compete with similar fair trade coffee companies suc h as Java Factory and threatening new mainstream entrants such as Starbucks who can capture the market share quickly. The existing market media plan (Case exhibit 8) should be updated to focus on product differentiation and increase channel diversity. Just Us! should advertise in multiple newspapers, magazines, and outdoor locations to increase customer reach. Furthermore, Just Us! should promote more direct communication to events around colleges and young professionals emphasizing their fair trade and environment responsibility concept in order to foster community involvement.A major customer segment for Just Us is students and young professionals who are mostly tech-savvy. Therefore, internet should be a main advertising vehicle to reach mass marketing. Just Us should use internet marketing tools including emerging social media (e. g. Facebook, Tweeter, blogs), mobile advertisement (e. g. Groupon), search engine marketing, and co-op advertising on sites offering similar fair trad e concepts. Finally, the Marketing Director needs to utilize the fair trade Museum as a way to spread awareness as well as promote brand awareness just like they should in the new locations but take it one step further.Just Us! could hold free concerts or guest speakers at the museum to attract potential new customers. They could also charge for the concert and allow free admission if you bring a reciept from a recent purchase at the Grand Pre store. Just Us! could sponsor a local race or work with local University fundraisers in the community. Once again, Just Us! needs to be involved with the community to educate people about fair trade and get their customers involved to create a sense of community that can lead to new customers and extend the lifetime customer value of existing customers.

Confederation and Constitution - 1483 Words

| Historical Essay: | Confederation and Constitution | | Jason Sherman | | | The Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States, was adopted by the Continental Congress on November 15, 1777. However, sanction of the Articles of Confederation by all thirteen states did not occur until March 1, 1781. The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, which resulted in most of the power residing with the state governments. The need for a stronger Federal government soon became apparent and eventually led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
